Government

The City of Glenwood is home to 5,073 friendly people in the Loess Hills of southwest Iowa. A small rural community with strong ties to the Omaha metropolitan area, Glenwood is a dynamic and welcoming place to live and work. We operate on a Mayor-Council form of government with 5 City Council Members and a Mayor. Three Council Members are elected from wards and two are elected at large.

The City is served by an excellent public safety sector anchored by the Police force, a dedicated Volunteer Fire Department and professional EMT’s. Our hard working Public Works Department is responsible for street and storm sewer maintenance and snow removal among other duties, and the City Administrative Office provides financial oversight and land use planning for the entire City.

Quality of life amenities are also a very important aspect of city life in Glenwood and our free Public Library provides internet access, multimedia, genealogy services and access to over 34,000 volumes.
The Glenwood Park Board oversees the 45 acre Glenwood Lake Park, complete with independent historical museum and 750 seat Amphitheater, as well as 3 other smaller neighborhood parks throughout the city.
The City of Glenwood also offers a beautiful Municipal Cemetery on a hilltop.

Various other boards and committees serve smaller, but no less important, needs and interests in the community. The City of Glenwood and rural areas outside corporate limits are served with municipal water and sanitary sewer service by the Glenwood Municipal Utilities Board of Trustees. We strive to provide the best possible service to the residents of the city and depend on citizens for support and direction.
