June 2, 2023 Update
Lifeguards are at the pool starting orientation this afternoon! The play feature was turned on this afternoon and is in working order. Public Works will be working next week on getting everything put back together and concrete will be poured. Tentatively, we have set the opening day for Monday, June 12, 2023 at 1:00 p.m.

The pool season is planned to run from June 12 – August 20 or 21, 2023 every day from 1:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Then open August 26 – 27 and September 2 – 4, 2023 from 1:00 – 6:00 p.m. (available staff permitting).

We will begin selling pool passes next week – dates & times will be posted Monday, June 5, 2023. The form is available now on our website for download.

June 1, 2023 Update
The pumps at the Aquatic Center were turned on this morning and have been running since. The repairs to the supply lines are proving successful and no additional leaks or water loss has been observed. The pump that was not pumping at capacity, is operating correctly. Public Works employees will be working on putting the pool deck back together, which includes pouring concrete and letting it set. We are cautiously optimistic that we will be able to open within the next two weeks. In the meantime we will be actively working on preparing the pool, training lifeguards, setting up processes for pool memberships and determining an opening date. We will provide an update tomorrow in regards to what next steps are, however, an opening date may not be determined until early next week.
Once an opening date has been determined, we will begin selling pool passes. Passes will only be available for purchase at City Hall and we will offer extended hours for that purpose.
We cannot thank our Public Works employees enough for their hard work and determination. They have spent the better part of May working on the pool to get it ready. Each time a new challenge presented itself, they were there to help troubleshoot and find solutions. Without this dedicated team, we would not be where we are today. Eagle Engineering and JEO have both been instrumental during this time, they have been on site many days in May and we are very appreciative of them.

May 31, 2023 Update
Public Works employees repaired the crack found in the supply line and had Stouder Plumbing video the rest of that line, no additional cracks were found. Pumps will be turned on tomorrow, they will assess the pump that wasn’t running at full capacity last week. We should have more information tomorrow on next steps.
The repairs that were coordinated by JEO and made by Eriksen this spring were at no cost to the City, the additional repairs made to the supply lines have been made by our Public Works employees. The Aquatic Center is funded by the 1% Local Option Sales & Service Tax (also known as LOST), which was implemented in part to pay for the Aquatic Center and the building maintenance for the YMCA.

May 30, 2023 Update
Last week Public Works repaired the broken union that was found in the water supply line coming from the supply manifold box and feeding into the pool near the deep end. Once it was repaired, water was still leaking into the area around the manifold box, Public Works had Stouder Plumbing scope the supply line with a camera, a break was found at a junction about 100′ from the repaired area. That area was dug up today and we will have Stouder Plumbing come back and scope the supply line from the elbow to the pool to determine if there are any other leaks in the line. Late last week, after the pumps were turned on, it was noted that one of the four pumps was not working at capacity, we are in contact with an electrician who will assess the pump. Public Works employees continue to repair the issues at the pool, coordinating with our engineer, JEO and other partners with the goal of getting the Aquatic Center open as soon as possible.

May 26, 2023 Update
We do not have an opening date set at this time. Public Works employees are troubleshooting a couple of lingering issues at the Aquatic Center. However, the repairs made this spring, including the repair to the supply line all passed the pressure test.

In the meantime, Public Works employees will work on repairs and coordinate with JEO as needed. We have met with Diana Burchett and Alexis Unger with YMCA to discuss overall pool operations for the summer, membership prices have been set and we are working on processes for selling memberships.

We will update our website and Facebook with information as it is available. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we navigate these repairs. While it has taken longer than we had hoped, we believe this process is necessary to find long-term solutions, instead of quick fixes that need to be repaired each year. We will continue to work with JEO, Eriksen Construction and Eagle Engineering throughout this process.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Amber Farnan, City Administrator/Finance Director at 712-527-4717 or by email at amber.farnan@cityofglenwood.org.

May 17, 2023 Update

3:25 p.m. Update: The contractor and JEO are working on a solution for the leak, we hopefully will have more information tomorrow or Friday. We will continue to update as we have more information.

Late yesterday afternoon, the Public Works Director noticed a leak at the pool. Upon further investigation, it was found that the repairs made early last season to a pipe underneath the decking of the pool were the source of the leak. We were unable to test the repairs made to this area last season, because when the pumps were turned on, we had a large T-fitting crack and had to shut everything off.  We have been in contact with JEO and the contractor we hired last year to make those repairs. We believe that it is a fitting that needs to be tightened or adjusted, but won’t know for sure until the contractor can come out and assess it. Once we have a better idea of what repairs and/or adjustments needs to be made, we will update the website and Facebook. We appreciate the citizens’ patience as we work through these issues. Again, we want to thank JEO for assisting us with repairs and coordinating contractors.  We are extremely thankful to our Public Works Director and employees for their tireless work on the pool and making sure we can open and stay open this summer.

May 16, 2023 Update
Water will be turned back on this morning and continue until the pool is filled. Tomorrow, Wednesday, May 17, 2023 we will be turning the pumps on and assessing if the repairs made to the T-fittings is sufficient. We will post an update tomorrow and again later in the week with more information!

May 15, 2023 Update
Water has been turned on and the pool is filling! The water will stay on for most of the day and will be turned off later this afternoon, Public Works will check the water level and mark it. Tomorrow morning (Tuesday) they will check the water level again and if there are no issues the water will be turned back on until it is filled. On Wednesday morning, if the water is holding, the pumps will be turned on. Jeo and Eagle Engineering will be on site when the pumps are turned on. We will continue to update this page throughout the week with progress. Aquatic Center rates were set at Tuesday’s (May 9) Council Meeting and will be posted on our page shortly. We will not begin to sell passes until we are certain the pool will open, we are still planning for a Memorial Day opening! The City is very appreciative of our Public Works employees, who have spent several hours at the pool this spring, including today in the rain, finishing repairs, cleaning & setting up the pool to be filled.

May 3, 2023 Update
Public Works employees have been working on sealing the joints under the gutters and doing some touch up painting. We are on track to turn the water on at the pool on or around May 15, 2023. JEO, Ericksen Construction, Public Works & Eagle Engineering will on be on site when the water is turned on to assess the repairs made and ensure the pumps and pipes are in good working order.

April 26, 2023 Update
Ericksen Construction finished repairs on the pool on Tuesday, April 25, 2023. Public Works Director, Jamey Clark met with Trevor from JEO and Jake Zimmerer from Eagle Engineering to do a walk-thru at the Aquatic Center to review the repairs. Public Works employees have begun sealing the joints underneath the gutters around the top edge of the pool, the sealant takes seven (7) days to cure. After the sealant cures, Public Works employees will begin touch up painting, once the paint cures we can then put water in the pool. JEO, Ericksen, Eagle Engineering and the Public Works Director will all be present when the water is turned on. They will be observing the area in the pump house where the T-fitting was replaced. If the weather cooperates, the pool could be filled the 2nd or 3rd week of May. Bearing any major issues, we are optimistic that the Aquatic Center can open on or near Memorial Day.

We appreciate the patience of the residents of Glenwood and those in the surrounding areas as we have worked with JEO and Ericksen to ascertain the scope of the repairs needed and how best to move forward. We are grateful for JEO and Ericksen for their willingness to partner with us on these repairs and their expertise.

April 18, 2023 Update
Ericksen Construction has been hard at work making pool repairs. As of today, the T-fittings in the pump house have been repaired and they have finished the joint sealing in the deep end of the pool. Ericksen Construction determined upon arrival that the best course of action would be to joint seal the entire pool, that work is continuing. Our Public Works Employees will be putting sealant under the metal gutters on the sides of the pool.  The decking by the diving boards will be finished once the joint sealing is completed.  The repairs will take longer than expected since the entire pool will be joint sealed. However, we are still on track to be open for the Summer 2023 season. City Council will discuss Aquatic Center prices at the May 9, 2023 City Council meeting.  We will continue to post updates as they become available.

April 12, 2023 Update
JEO and Ericksen Construction will be on site starting today to complete several repairs. Including joint sealing in the deep end, repair of decking near the diving boards and replacing and refitting T-fittings in the pump house. These repairs should take around 2 weeks, once complete the pool will be filled and it will be assessed for any additional repairs that may be needed. However, we are not anticipating any additional repairs will be needed. The City’s engineering firm, Eagle Engineering will  have staff on site while repairs are made and will report back to the City as they progress.

Public Works, Glenwood Community Schools & Eagle Engineering spent last week assessing a sinkhole that had formed underneath the sidewalk behind the new HS Gym and into the pool property.  It was found that when the Gym was built, the School’s storm drain was bored into and it was leaking. Public Works made the necessary repairs and will be monitoring the area for any additional sinkholes. JEO had requested this repair be made in addition to the repairs that are being done at the Aquatic Center.

We are anticipating the Aquatic Center will be open for a full summer season!

If you have any questions, please call Amber at City Hall – 712-527-4717. We will continue to update this page & our Facebook page as we have more information.

April 7, 2023 Update

JOE & Erickson Construction will be on site at the Aquatic Center beginning Wednesday, April 12, 2023. They estimate the repairs will take around two weeks. We will continue to update this page as we have more information!

2023 UPDATE

The City is working with JEO & Erickson Construction to ensure needed repairs are done on the Aquatic Center in anticipation of a full Summer Swim Season! The first repairs made will be to seal some of the pool joints. The compound that is being used requires air and concrete temperatures consistently over 41 degrees, once the weather warms up, contractors will be down to seal the joints. JEO and Erickson will then schedule the replacement of part of the decking near the diving boards and replacement of some of the “T” fittings. We are working closely JEO to schedule these repairs. We will update this page as repairs are scheduled and completed.

Aquatic Center prices for 2023 have yet to be decided on and will be announced once City Council sets them.

The Aquatic Center will not be open for the Summer 2022 Season due to several needed repairs.
